On work, giving, and other triggers

I finally crashed at work today. For weeks I’ve been attempting to carry more and more of the weight, feeling responsible for anything that wasn’t done, wanting everything to be perfect. Today I gave out. I should have known it was coming, but I didn’t. It’s happened before. I panic. I say too much. I get very angry. My shoulders ache. I feel trapped. And I finally hit my limits… this morning I overslept. By TWO HOURS. My body told me what my brain didn’t: enough is enough.

Thankfully, everyone seems to have understood. They can begin to realize how much I’ve been doing, and admitted they weren’t aware that I was doing all that I was. They are considering making small changes that will remove some of the weight. My boss was apparently pretty angry when she realized what was happening. There is still a disagreement about what will be done, but it’s better. And since my coworkers did help some this morning, even though I missed two hours of work, I was caught up by the end of the day.

I have a problem with overworking and overgiving, and because I struggle with feeling like I need to do all of the work or all of the giving, because I feel guilt if I don’t give or don’t do more and feel responsible for anything that is not done or not given, I know both are areas I need to watch. In order to keep from giving too much, I don’t usually give at all. If I start, I overdo it. So ask me to help in other ways, but not with money. If I’m not careful I’d be broke. I’ve given thousands away because I felt guilty, felt encouraged to, or felt responsible for making up any differences. I can’t do that any more.

The hurricanes have triggered me: everyone wants help. But I can’t provide the billions in aid that is needed. I can’t give away my tools or supplies, either. No one will give back to me. I’ve learned that much. So all I can do is say no. And I can get angry. Angry that the charities the money is funneled through take portions for themselves beyond what is necessary. Angry that the government is giving to organizations without vetting them first. Angry that some of those organizations, particularly religious organizations, will use the funding to benefit themselves rather than those with the most dire needs.

Forgive me for my anger and my resistance. I’ve been the one asked too many times. Asked by the pastor driving the Cadillac to give several thousand to a “sister in Christ”… from my own $14,000 salary. Asked at a time when I didn’t have health insurance and had eaten so much chicken ($0.29/lb for a ten pound bag of legs and thighs) that once I did have a decent job I got queasy at the thought of eating any more of it. Asked at a time when expenses were so tight that I really do still remember the price of the things that I could afford even though it’s been 20 years since that happened. And forgive me that I’m resistant… resistant to giving when I’ve seen what I gave used to purchase that Cadillac instead of helping those with real needs, seen men given meager portions of their large funds (with loud applause) while telling teens and young adults that were struggling to survive that they should give everything they had.

Everywhere I turn there are requests for more to be given. Everyone either has a need or knows someone with a need. I have one too: I have a need to not feel guilty for not chipping in to every fund that is started. I haven’t gotten there yet, but hopefully someday I will. Hopefully I will be able to give some, because I’d like to and because the needs that the requests are for are often very real. But I can’t right now.

I have the same problem with overworking. I want to do everything. I see a need and I want to throw myself at it until it is complete. I stress about it, dream about it, live and breathe it every moment. I get angry that no one else is helping with it, and I get angry at myself for trying to do too much. It’s been especially difficult lately because I was warned that the new director would “destroy” anyone who said something wasn’t their job. And since then more and more has become my job that is not in my scope of work. I finally was able to tell him today that if he ever heard me say something wasn’t my job, I wasn’t saying in any way that I wouldn’t assist all that I could, but simply reminding myself of something I tend to lose sight of: I cannot carry everyone’s weight and I am not responsible for everything that happens in an office or department. I am not responsible for the action or inaction of others.

I’m not sure how much of this is related to spiritual abuse, but at least some of it is. The demands on time and money were real and the expectations were huge. The guilt trips still run through my mind regularly when there is a need and I don’t throw everything into it. Perhaps they were worse for me… my dear pastor emphasized that I had a savings account, and hinted that I should drain it for others who had less. He never said that outright, but he crossed a boundary with his requests many times. He knew how little I made because he knew what my tithe was, but he still pressured me. He never stopped, but I finally did–the day he asked me to help a couple who had taken an early retirement buyout and then spent it all on frivolous things, then didn’t have enough for groceries. He wanted me to give them the money to buy their steak when my personal food budget was much less than $1/meal. That was the day I finally said no, and that was the day his requests stopped. I moved soon after that, but the requests, the constant guilt-trip ‘reminders’ that I was ‘blessed’ with the time and energy and money so that I could give it all away, have stuck. The only way to stop them right now is to say no. It’s not selfishness that drives that, though it probably seems like it to some. It’s not selfishness, it’s sense, driven by desperation.

Getting Out the Old Books: The Literal Word by M.D. Treece

Probably the most scholarly words in the Oneness Apostolic churches I have ever seen written on 1 Corinthians 11- otherwise known as the “hair chapter”- is from The Literal Word by M.D. Treece. Most writings on the subject are filled with anecdotes and circular reasoning and don’t very much address the claim that women’s hair must be uncut. It is often mentioned with little evidence. I have to give M.D. Treece credit for trying to tackle this issue.

(Disclaimer: The verses in 1 Corinthians 11, taken by themselves, do not address the fact that women were allowed to shave their heads in the Old Testament when they took the Nazarite vow. The actual meaning of the verses in 1 Corinthians 11 are a widely debated topic among scholars and what is demonstrated here is simply how M.D. Treece’s own logic does not make sense within itself. It does not demonstrate or argue whether or not M.D. Treece is right or wrong about his beliefs and translations otherwise concerning hair/veils/having hair down the head/customs of the day or any other assertion.)

He translates verse number 4 “Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head” as “And every man praying or prophesying having hair down his head disgraces his head.” (pg 247) I have a photo of his comments on this so you can read his comments on it for yourself below.

So, he translates the word covered as “having hair down his head”. On page 249, he begins to look at the word “uncovered.” He says the covering is hair and not a literal veil. He says “That is the central theme of this discourse.”

The real focus here is going to be on vs 6 “For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn; but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.” He translates this as “For if a woman is not covered, let her hair be cut; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved, let her be covered.”

Let’s look at this closely a minute. He defines “covered” for a man as “having hair down his head.” So, let’s insert that definition into his translation and see if it works:

“For if a woman doesn’t have hair down her head, let her hair be cut, but if it’s disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved, let her have hair down her head.”- Doesn’t make much sense does it?

First of all, I have read that some people want to say that the word shorn means “to cut.” There is a difference between the words shorn and shaven. We know what shaven means but what does it mean to be “shorn?”

According to Thayer’s Greek Lexicon, it means “absolutely, of shearing or cutting short the hair of the head”. See below:

STRONGS NT 2751: κείρω

κείρω; (1 aorist ἐκειρα (Acts 8:32 T WH marginal reading)); 1 aorist middle ἐκειραμην; from Homer down; to shear: a sheep, Acts 8:32 ((cf. above) from Isaiah 53:7). Middle to get or let be shorn (Winers Grammar, § 38, 2 b.; Buttmann, § 135, 4): τήν κεφαλήν, Acts 18:18; absolutely, of shearing or cutting short the hair of the head, 1 Corinthians 11:6 (cf. Winer’s Grammar, § 43, 1).

It means to shear like a sheep, or like a military haircut.

Let’s look at M.D. Treece’s translation and see if it makes sense when we insert these definitions:

“For if a woman doesn’t have hair down her head, let her hair be shorn like a sheep, but if it’s disgraceful for a woman to have her hair shorn like a sheep, or shaved, let her have hair down her head.”

This makes much more sense, doesn’t it? If these definitions are used, not only does the translation make sense but it also means that there is no prohibition against women cutting their hair.

Every single argument for uncut hair is based on the idea that the word shorn means a little trim, but we can clearly see that this is not what the word means simply by looking at the definition in the Greek Lexicon. If you read arguments for women’s uncut hair, this foundational argument is often skimmed over and the anecdotal arguments and circular reasoning begins with a lot of fear sprinkled in about what is going to happen to you if you disagree. But when we put aside the fear and traditional teachings we can clearly see that the word shorn means to shear like a sheep and does not mean what some are saying it means.

I have provided photos of four pages. Page 247, page 248, page 249, page 250.

Our 20th Anniversary Giveaway

This is now closed.

We have given away books for years as part of the spiritualabuse.org ministry and this will be our fourth large one via this blog for 2017 and it is in celebration of our 20 year anniversary of the website. This is your chance to receive one or more free books and other items on various issues. After making your request, be sure to respond to my email requesting your mailing address if I do not already have it. In some past giveaways we had people request items but never responded. This keeps material from others.

We always provide these at no charge to our readers. The total cost for just the postage on our first through third 2017 giveaways, plus the cost of the Christianity Without The Cross giveaway, was over $200.00. The Shattering II and our giveaway last Sunday cost more than $140.00.

The first people with a USA mailing address who respond will receive their choice of books/DVDs/CDs at no charge to them. (Unfortunately, it is cost prohibitive to mail these books outside of the USA.) To respond, just leave a comment for this post. If you are unsure what any item is about, the links will take you to Amazon where you may read their description and reviews.

Please understand that comments require approval unless you have previously commented with the same email and screen name. So while it may look like you are first, there may be someone ahead of you whose comment is pending. Be sure to use your actual email address when setting up to comment as I will be contacting you through it if I do not already have your address. Check your spam folder as email sometimes goes there. (For your privacy, do not put your email or address in the comment.)

Be sure to mention which item(s) you would like and you may refer to them by number instead of the title. There is no limit on how many you may request, though you may only have one copy of any title.

Up for grabs are several used books, DVDs & CDs. Being used, they will have imperfections and possible markings. Many of these I have not read, so do not take their inclusion as an endorsement from me.

Our 20th Anniversary

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the spiritualabuse.org website. [Edit: 2023 marked our 26th anniversary and I have updated this post with a few stats.] We had a very small beginning way back on August 23, 1997 and over time have grown to be fairly large. We were originally part of AOL’s home pages (membership pages) until January 25, 2000 when I obtained the spiritualabuse.org domain name. I had been watching the domain name for awhile and no one had obtained that or the .com. After I purchased the .org domain, the .com was obtained on May 25, 2000 by Dale S. Ryan for Jeff VanVonderan’s abuse website. [Edit: The domain name has been secured and paid ahead through January 25, 2029.]

For those who were not aware of the website back in the late 90s, the Wayback Machine has an archive of some of the pages during our days at AOL. Some of our readers may want to see our modest beginnings and compare how much the site has changed since then. I have to chuckle when I see some of it. 🙂 At that time, there were not yet many websites or writings on the subject of abuse in churches.

On May 16 of the same year we started the Christian-Koinonia Support Group as part of Egroups, which later became Yahoo Groups. On August 8, 2003 we started to make our move to a phpBB2 bulletin board system and closed the Yahoo list to posting on August 31, 2003 after moving the group to the website. Moving ahead to December 29, 2007, we purchased vBulletin’s software and in early January 2008 we were up & running on our present system. We have a wealth of information there for those who have experienced an unhealthy church. [2023 Edit: Since starting the Facebook group, this one has been mostly inactive, so we don’t advertise it now.]

March 30, 2010 was the day that the Facebook Page promoting the website started. This is open to public view and has just over 1250 likes. [12/26/23 Edit: The Page now has 10,378 followers and 7263 likes.] Then on February 20, 2015, we opened a closed (private) support group on Facebook that has grown to just under 200 members. [12/26/23 Edit: The support group now has 866 members.]

January 11, 2012 is when our YouTube channel was opened and on August 15 we started uploading videos.  There are 48 videos available and they have had 62,514 views. We have 111 subscribers. [12/26/23 Edit: It now has 50 videos and 322 subscribers. Nothing has been posted since 2018, though some playlists are updated. I hope at some point to get back to this.]

In June 2016, we added this WordPress blog section & I decided to try Twitter again after an unsuccessful earlier attempt in 2010. [12/26/23 Edit: We do regularly tweet. There are 1135 followers and 8011 posts have been made. The blog now includes 973 posts and has had about 31 authors through the years.]

[12/26/23 Edit: We added an Instagram account in the summer of 2023, and there are 71 followers. It hasn’t yet been utilized alot.]

Instead of being able to decrease our activity, the need for material and support groups dealing with spiritual abuse has not diminished since 1997, but rather has increased. The number of books and articles on the subject is plentiful today as more and more people speak up and add their voices and knowledge. The number of websites dealing with some aspect of abuse has rapidly grown, though some of them have also folded after a season. I wish that there was no longer a need for this site or our support group. But every day people are joining unhealthy churches and are subjected to spiritual abuse.

I’d like to thank all of those who have helped this website in some way through the years. Your support has enabled us to continue our efforts to help those who have found themselves in turmoil after being part of an unhealthy church. I had no clue when this first started that we would still be around 20 years later. May all who have been subjected to spiritual abuse find healing and be free of all the erroneous teachings and false perceptions of God.
