Giveaway- Final Girl: Surviving Church and Childhood

This is only open to those with a USA mailing address. There is absolutely no cost to enter.  (Be sure to read to the bottom of this post to discover another book we are giving away this year.)

This is your chance to win a copy of Final Girl: Surviving Church and Childhood by Debbie McNulty. It is in part United Pentecostal related as Debbie had attended Calvary Gospel Church, a United Pentecostal Church in Madison, Wisconsin. We have written extensively about this church.

Here is an excerpt from her book, which was released on October 13, 2026:

Throughout my childhood, thoughts of the Rapture Monster haunted my dreams and stalked my waking hours. A Thief in the Night planted the seed, and my family and church watered it diligently. All the adults I loved were one hundred percent sure the rapture was about to happen at any moment. Could that weird cloud in the sky be Jesus returning? Is that a car horn or the trumpet of the Lord?

I worried about what sin would keep me from flying up to heaven along with my mother. If she wasn’t where I thought she should be, I immediately worried I’d been left behind.

“You never know when the rapture will happen,” my grandma said, pulling me closer.

“Can you imagine all those driverless cars and planes? Planes will just be falling out of the sky,” my mother said with an excitement I did not understand.

What if she disappears while driving the car? What will happen to me?

These fears drove me to pray constantly and chase perfection.

“Dear Jesus, please forgive my sins, even the ones I have forgotten about, and take me up in the rapture.”

Our church believed many things about the end times, but they always came with a caveat. This was prophecy, after all, and there was no way to be one hundred percent sure of things. It always seemed better to be safe than sorry. My interactions with God were less about a joyous relationship and more about avoiding peril. In my mind, Jesus was a scorekeeper, keeping track of every thought and action. The A Thief in the Night film series taught me He had no problem sending a little girl to the guillotine.

Decades later, the Rapture Monster was still coming for me.
